Introduction to safe biological sample storage solutions with MVE liquid nitrogen tanks

Storing valuable biological samples (stem cells, tissues, IVF embryos, vaccines, etc.) requires a stable deep cold environment and reliable equipment. A small mistake in storage at ultra-low temperatures can damage samples, significantly impacting research and treatment. Understanding this, MVE Biological Solutions has developed top-quality liquid nitrogen (LN2) tanks for applications ranging from tissue banks and reproductive support (IVF) to laboratories and deep cold sample transportation. Notably, MVE is proud to be the only global manufacturer of cryogenic storage equipment that is FDA registered, a key certification of quality and reliability for users.

In this article, we will explore MVE Biological Solutions’ leading product lines, including MVE HEco, CryoSystem, Stock Series (IVF), Vapor Shipper, and Doble, among others. Each product line is designed for specific needs, ensuring that LN2 temperatures of approximately 196°C are safely maintained for biological samples. This article also highlights the value of FDA certification for quality and biological safety, helping hospitals, labs, IVF centers, tissue banks, and medical device distributors confidently choose the right solution.

Let’s explore why MVE liquid nitrogen tanks are trusted globally for preserving the most valuable items in the life sciences field.

FDA-Approved quality – A guarantee of safety and reliability

MVE Biological Solutions’ FDA registration holds special significance in the cold storage equipment industry. According to MVE, this certification indicates that MVE’s entire factory and products are listed and monitored by the U.S. FDA, ensuring compliance with stringent regulations regarding the manufacturing, labeling, and distribution of medical devices. In other words, MVE liquid nitrogen tanks are manufactured to the highest standards of quality and safety, including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), rigorous documentation processes, strict hygiene controls, regular equipment calibration, and FDA-compliant staff training.

Unlike FDA approvals for drugs or implant devices (which require clinical trials), MVE’s FDA registration primarily confirms process and quality compliance by the manufacturer. This provides absolute peace of mind for users: hospitals and labs can trust that MVE’s cryogenic storage equipment is managed as a medical device, meeting public health protection requirements. In fact, FDA registration emphasizes that MVE products are suitable for storing biological materials regulated by the FDA (human cells, tissues, biological products, etc.).

In addition to FDA certification, MVE also complies with a series of international quality management standards. The company has achieved ISO 13485 (quality management system for medical devices) certification for many years, proving that the products are designed and manufactured to be safe and effective. MVE tanks also meet CE standards according to the European Medical Device Directive (MDD 93/42/EEC) and are certified by prestigious organizations (UL, C-UL). All of this demonstrates MVE’s commitment to maintaining superior quality, high reliability, and biological safety for users. When choosing MVE liquid nitrogen tanks, customers not only purchase storage equipment but also receive a guarantee of international quality.

Outstanding product lines and advantages of MVE liquid nitrogen tanks

MVE Biological Solutions offers a wide range of products, from large-volume freezers to portable liquid nitrogen tanks, to meet all storage and sample transportation needs. Below are some of the key product lines with practical applications and outstanding features.

MVE HEco™ Series – High-performance freezers for biobanking

When biobanks, large freezer “farms,” or large-scale sample storage centers require an efficient and reliable solution, the MVE HEco Series is the top choice. True to its name, HEco (High Efficiency eco), this freezer series is optimized for high performance and environmental friendliness (consuming less liquid nitrogen). With a streamlined LN2 distribution system and vacuum-insulated vacuum tubes, the MVE HEco 800, 1500, and 1800 are the highest-performing liquid nitrogen freezers available today. They provide stable “dry” storage at temperatures of -190°C, eliminating the risk of cross-contamination caused by direct sample contact with liquid nitrogen while reducing nitrogen loss.

One of the key advantages of MVE HEco is its extremely large storage capacity. For example, the MVE HEco 1800 model can store up to ~94,500 2ml sample vials, making it ideal for biorepositories storing tens of thousands of cell samples, DNA, and vaccines. Despite storing such a large number of samples, these freezers maintain a uniform temperature of -190°C, even at the highest positions in the sample racks, ensuring that all samples are safe. The tanks also have an industry-leading hold time, ensuring sample protection even in the event of nitrogen supply interruptions.

Regarding design, MVE HEco emphasizes safety and convenience: all wiring and electrical components are enclosed, with a hinged working surface to allow operators to work more safely. The low tank mouth height facilitates easier sample retrieval. The company also integrates MVE Touch Screen (TS) control technology or the TEC 3000 smart controller, allowing for continuous monitoring of temperature and LN2 levels, and sending alerts when issues arise. Additionally, a backup battery option is available for system operation during power outages. All of this is designed to maximize sample protection, user convenience, and peace of mind.

Practical applications: The MVE HEco Series is ideal for tissue banks and stem cell banks, as well as large-scale vaccine storage centers and research institutes and hospitals that require the storage of tens of thousands of biological samples. Typical customers include biomedical research institutes, hematology centers that store umbilical cord stem cells, or pharmaceutical companies that store clinical trial samples. With MVE HEco, they get a deep-cold storage system that is ultra-durable, cost-effective, and meets stringent medical standards (FDA, CE), providing complete reliability.

MVE CryoSystem Series – Lightweight, economical aluminum nitrogen tanks for labs

While the MVE HEco serves large-scale operations, the MVE CryoSystem Series is designed for mid-sized sample storage needs in laboratories and hospitals with flexibility and cost-effectiveness. This product line features liquid nitrogen tanks crafted from aluminum alloys, which are both lightweight and compact, making them easy to move when needed. Thanks to optimized insulation structures, MVE CryoSystem tanks achieve significantly lower nitrogen consumption compared to other models in the same class, thereby helping to reduce operational costs. At the same time, each tank still offers a significant storage capacity, ranging from approximately 750 to 6,000 sample vials, depending on the model (such as CryoSystem 750, 2000, 4000, 6000). This capacity is sufficient to meet the average storage needs of most modern biological labs.

A standout feature of the MVE CryoSystem is its small size combined with exceptional durability and stability. The aluminum body is robust, featuring a high-strength neck and a secure lid to ensure sample safety at temperatures of approximately -190°C for extended periods. Even when the lid is frequently opened for sample retrieval, the internal temperature quickly recovers to deep cold levels, protecting the samples from temperature fluctuations. The CryoSystem tanks also have a tamper-proof lid to prevent unauthorized access, making them ideal for storing important samples. Notably, MVE offers the CryoSystem 6000 Full Auto version, integrated with the TEC 3000 controller for continuous temperature & nitrogen level monitoring, automatically adding LN2 when needed. This system ensures peace of mind 24/7, as it automatically maintains optimal temperature and issues alerts if anything unusual happens, eliminating the risk of manual nitrogen replenishment oversight. It can even log data for up to 10 years, supporting remote access and monitoring.

Practical applications: The MVE CryoSystem Series is well-suited for hospital laboratories, research centers, or medium-sized facilities that require biological sample storage. For example, a small IVF lab can use the CryoSystem to store a few hundred embryos/sperm samples, a genetics lab for storing DNA tubes or blood samples, or a hospital hematology department for moderate quantities of stem cell samples. Due to its portability, the CryoSystem tank is also useful in situations requiring urgent sample transportation or relocation (with a handle and lightweight design). With reasonable ownership and operational costs, it is an ideal solution for those who need medical-grade equipment on a limited budget. The MVE CryoSystem strikes a balance between performance and cost-effectiveness, further enhanced by its FDA certification, which increases reliability for users.

MVE Stock Series (IVF) – Specialized storage solution for embryos and IVF samples

The reproductive support (IVF) field requires extremely strict storage standards: embryos and sperm must be stored safely over time, without cross-contamination or temperature fluctuations. Understanding this need, MVE developed the Stock Series (also known as the IVF series) specifically for IVF clinics and embryo banks. The Stock Series currently includes two key models: MVE 816P-2T and MVE 103, designed for different usage scenarios at IVF centers.

  • MVE 816P-2T: This is a unique two-tier liquid nitrogen freezer designed to provide the “best of both worlds” for IVF embryo storage. The 816 2-T tank features two storage levels: the lower level is immersed in nitrogen vapor at -190°C, while the upper level is positioned closer to the tank neck for easy access. This design allows users to store samples in nitrogen vapor (preventing direct contact with LN2) to prevent cross-contamination between embryos while still maintaining a cold environment during handling. The MVE 816 2-T has a large LN2 capacity, supporting both vapor and liquid storage, offering maximum flexibility for IVF labs. With two storage levels, samples at the lower level can be easily retrieved through a smart access port, eliminating the need to lift the entire rack for frequent sample retrieval, making the process more convenient. Thanks to these innovations, IVF labs can rely on absolute temperature control and sample safety, a crucial factor when handling valuable embryos.
  • MVE 103: Unlike the 816 2-T, the MVE 103 is a traditional, medium-sized liquid nitrogen tank (for liquid storage), suitable for temporary storage or smaller sample needs. With a simple design and high stability, the MVE 103 is ideal for backup tanks or for use in small IVF labs where sample volumes are lower.

Both models in the Stock Series meet MVE’s quality standards, including stable storage temperatures, durable rubber necks, and optional monitoring systems. Notably, the MVE 816P-2T has become the top choice at many IVF centers because it comprehensively addresses biological safety concerns for embryos (avoiding cross-contamination with vapor storage) and easy operation. Thanks to its wide, low neck, embryologists can quickly handle embryos while keeping them cold, minimizing the time they are exposed to ambient temperatures.

Practical applications: The MVE Stock Series targets IVF clinics and embryo banks at obstetrics and gynecology hospitals. These places often store frozen embryos, sperm, and ovarian tissue that require absolute safety for decades. With its specialized features, the MVE Stock Series enables IVF centers to enhance service quality, offering safer embryo storage, reduced risks, and convenient handling procedures. This product line also exemplifies the value of FDA certification – in reproductive medicine, every embryo is priceless, and doctors and patients will feel more confident knowing their embryo storage equipment is regulated according to U.S. medical device standards.
