NIH stops funding animal research – What are new alternative methods?

News July 23, 2025

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has officially announced the cessation of funding for animal testing research. This marks a significant shift in the direction of modern research.

This is a crucial time for scientists, research organizations, and biotechnology companies to reassess their development strategies. There’s a stronger focus on investing in non-animal platforms. New research groups can also leverage non-animal testing methods to attract more funding.

Limitations of animal testing

Animal-based biomedical research has been a longstanding tradition, contributing significantly to the development of treatments and drugs. However, there are still many limitations:

  • Lack of accuracy: Animal models frequently fail to reflect the impact of drugs on the human body accurately.
  • High cost and time consumption: Animal testing requires extensive preparation and monitoring.
  • Ethical concerns: The use of animals in biomedical research is increasingly criticized due to ethical issues related to testing on living beings.

These limitations have prompted large organizations, such as the NIH, and researchers to quickly seek alternative methods to optimize research and ensure humane practices.

NIH funding policy encouraging non-animal testing

Given the persistent limitations of animal testing, the NIH has decided to stop funding studies that rely solely on animal models and encourages the development of more sustainable alternative solutions.

According to Drug Discovery & Development (July 2024), this decision reflects a broader trend of promoting modern alternatives, such as 3D models, organoids, organ-on-a-chip technologies, and AI-based simulation platforms. These aim to improve accuracy, reduce costs, and, in particular, minimize reliance on animals in research.

This also directly responds to the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, passed by the U.S. Congress in 2022, which removed the mandatory requirement for animal testing before clinical trials in humans. Instead, the law encourages the use of more appropriate alternatives with better potential for predicting efficacy and safety.

The NIH’s decision to stop funding animal-only research is expected to:

  • Promote the advancement of biotechnology, particularly in disease modeling and drug development.
  • Reduce costs and time in the pharmaceutical research and development process.
  • Improve ethics in preclinical research.

However, the NIH emphasizes that it is not eliminating animal research but is prioritizing studies that integrate human models or alternative methods to increase the transferability of results to clinical settings. This trend has made non-animal research solutions the focal point for many biotechnology companies.

Alternative testing solution – STEMdiff™

With the change in NIH funding policy, STEMCELL Technologies offers alternative animal models, notably the STEMdiff™ platform, which differentiates stem cells into specific cell lines and organoid models. This product line enables the creation of organoids derived from iPSC or ESC cells, representing organs such as the brain, intestine, liver, and lungs, thereby simulating the real biological environments found in the human body.

Each STEMdiff™ kit comes with detailed, easy-to-follow instructions to standardize the differentiation process. They are particularly useful when working with gene-edited or patient-derived hPSC cell lines, allowing for the generation of homogeneous cell types with the same genotype. This system is compatible with cell maintenance media, such as TeSR™, and is part of a comprehensive solution for human stem cell culture and differentiation.

Key advantages of STEMdiff™:

  • Minimizing errors in experiments: STEMdiff™ culture media are optimized under strict quality control systems, reducing variability between differentiations and across cell lines.
  • Compatibility with multiple ES and iPS cell lines: STEMdiff™ efficiently differentiates various ES and iPS cell lines, offering great flexibility in research and preclinical applications.
  • Standardized differentiation of cells from three germ layers: With simple kits, differentiating cells into ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm-derived lines becomes easier, laying the groundwork for specialized research models, such as organoids.
  • Creation and storage of progenitor cells: STEMdiff supports the creation and cryopreservation of progenitor cell lines, providing researchers with more control over experimental design. It also saves time and ensures consistent cell sources for subsequent differentiation steps as required by the research.

With the NIH’s strong shift towards non-animal testing methods, this presents a great opportunity for researchers and organizations to adopt more ethical and effective approaches. Products like STEMdiff™ by STEMCELL Technologies are ideal solutions to replace traditional animal models.
